Review on Threes – An Extremely Addictive Single Swipe iOS Puzzle Game!

Review on Threes – An Extremely Addictive Single Swipe iOS Puzzle Game!

This is one of those games that once you start playing, you just can’t stop. Threes! is a puzzle game that involves plenty of numbers. But no, it’s not a mind-boggling math game that requires difficult solving. It’s a game of pattern-matching driven by basic addition. Threes! is the latest collaboration by Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend (who’s also the creator of the game Hundreds), an exceptional duo that previously created Puzzlejuice.

Simple Yet Addictive Gameplay

On a 4×4 grid, you’ll find tiles with different colours and numbers. At the start of the game, you’ll see a random set of numbered tiles. All you need to do to shift the tiles is swipe them with one finger. Basically, the goal is to combine compatible tiles continuously without filling the board. Blue (1) and red (2) tiles form a three when merged, and all tiles that are multiples of three can only be combined with an exact counterpart. For example, two threes will form six; two six will form 12; a pair of 12 forms 24, and so on and so forth.

With each swipe, the contents of the board can shift left, right, up, or down. A new tile will appear on the board each time there’s an empty space resulting from a recent move.

Board space is limited; thus, you have to merge tiles continuously to free up space. You also have to consider the right placement of the new tile to accommodate your next possible pairing. You may move multiple rows or columns simultaneously, and you may also do more than one combination in a single action. The game ends when you can’t move anymore.

It’s best that you free multiple spaces with a single action only to play longer. Use the slow slide feature to do this. Rather than doing a full slide, hold the slide halfway through and go back to take a glimpse of the board’s arrangement if you make a particular move.

Your game score depends on the numbers and types of tiles on the board at the end of the game. A white tile equals thrice the score of its preceding number.

The app keeps track of all your games, and it sorts your previous games to present a comparison of your highest score versus the score in your last game. You’ll get to unlock a new character whenever you achieve a new height of three-powered tile. Of course, you’ll want to unlock all of the characters and get the highest score possible.

What’s So Great About This Game?

review-on-three

It’s incredibly addictive and super fun to play! It’s easy to get immersed in playing Threes! because you’ll always want to beat your high score and other people’s score as well. Threes! has simple rules and an intuitive gameplay, and yet it’s tough to master. It’s a challenging and provoking game that will keep you entertained for hours. You’ll be able to come up with appropriate strategies to get a better score than your last game.

There are no in-app purchases, and there’s no timer too. You can play as long as you want and take as much time as you need to plan a move. What’s more, you can pause the game and resume later on, as the game will save your current game state. So, if you suddenly have something to do, you don’t have to worry about losing your well thought-out game.

Threes! has colourful graphics and warm hues. The game uses simple colour palette — red, muted blue, and white tiles with splashes of orange, and a white background. The tiles have tiny faces, and they sometimes mutter “bored” when you take too long to make a move. The interface is very easy to navigate. Like the game, you can access the menu through single swipes. When you swipe right, you’ll see the game options where there’s an option to save battery life. The soundtrack is lovely to hear while playing the game.

However, perhaps the only missing feature is an undo button. It would be great to undo an action, especially when accidentally swiping in an unwanted direction.

A Must-Download Game for iOS Devices

On the whole, this game is undoubtedly one of the best single swipe puzzle games on the App Store today. Many avid players even consider it as the best game in its category. It’s a fantastic finger-swiping game for the discriminating gamer. If you’re searching for a simple yet challenging game to while the hours away, Threes! will surely impress you. Your friends will certainly love it too.
