8 Common Flaws and Issues With iOS 7.1 and How to Fix Them
Last week, Apple released the much-anticipated iOS 7.1 update for all compatible iPhone, Ipod touch, and iPad models. However, along with the impressive features and improvements, users have also observed frustrating flaws and problems with the new upgrade.
If you have recently upgraded your smartphone or tablet to iOS 7.1, you might be experiencing several known issues. Read this list of the most common problems with iOS 7.1 and potential solutions.
1. Poor Battery Life
Reduced battery life appears to be the topmost problem associated with the new update. Users have complained about how their battery quickly drains after updating to iOS 7.1. Extensive use can drain nearly half of the battery in just an hour. Even on standby, the battery life still drops by five to seven percent.
Solution: Put your smartphone, iPod, or tablet through several charge and re-charge cycles. Also go to Settings > General > Reset to do a soft reset. First, tap Reset All Settings. If it doesn’t help, you can choose to delete everything by tapping Erase All Content and Settings, and then you can reinstall iOS 7.1 via iTunes.
2. Five-second Lag
Some users on Apple Support Communities commented that they’ve experienced a noticeable lag of up to five seconds when using their mobile device’s keyboard.
Solution: Try resetting your device. Hold down the Sleep and Home button simultaneously for around 10 seconds. If this method fails, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
3. Bluetooth sound, Connectivity, and Car Issues
There have also been complaints regarding connectivity, sync, and hands-free use of devices in cars. Some users reported that their smartphones randomly switch between stereo and Bluetooth, resulting in several seconds of pauses before audio turns back on. Moreover, others also encountered problems when making a hands-free call.
Solution: First, talk to your dealer to ensure that there are no issues between your iOS and vehicle. Next, unpair and re-pair your devices before restarting your phone. If it doesn’t work, tap Settings > Bluetooth, and check that Sync Contacts is working.
4. Touch ID Issues
Apple’s fingerprint biometric scanner is reportedly buggy after the mobile software update. According to some users, Touch ID fails to recognize the owner’s fingerprint properly.
Solution: Check your settings, and ensure that the iPhone Unlock option is turned on, and then restart your phone. Also, try turning the feature on and off for a few times. Additionally, you may want to consider deleting all content and settings. If none of these works, the problem may be rooted to sensor failure, and you’ll have to get the hardware checked.
5. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Problems
More and more users in the Apple forums are complaining about Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Since the iOS 7.1 update, their phones frequently disable either Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or both. Sometimes, the music audio also doesn’t work.
Solution: Restart your device and clear your settings. If the problem persists, you may have to wait until Apple provides an effective fix.
6. Volume Malfunction
The new update also resulted in volume malfunctions in iPads.
Solution: Just reset your device using the method mentioned earlier (hold down the Sleep and Home button for 10 seconds), and wait until the Apple logo appears.
7. Personal Hotspot Issues
Another problem shared by users is related to personal hotspot APN settings. They couldn’t seem to save their preferred settings after upgrading to iOS 7.1 on an iPhone 4.
Solution: It appears that the problem is related to carriers. Not all carriers are official Apple resellers; hence the APN settings should be registered with the mobile device maker. Ask your carrier if they’re registered. If they are, you’ll most likely receive a text message that requests you to update your settings automatically.
8. Update Failure
If you’ve been attempting to upgrade your device to iOS 7.1 without success, you’re not alone.
Solution: Keep trying!
